Michael Grubb Studio has been appointed by Live Theatre as lighting consultants for the LiveWorks project. The studio will be working with Flanagan Lawrence (architects) and Oobe (Landscape architects).
LiveWorks is new £10 million capital scheme by Live Theatre to purchase and develop Quayside frontage and land and buildings adjacent to the theatre. The development will create a new landmark building on Newcastle’s Quayside with approximately 1500sqm net of highly desirable premium office space with river views. It will also create a new landscaped green space, a new pocket park at the centre of the site with public pedestrian access from the Quayside and a public and performance space managed and programmed by Live Theatre in daily use by tenants, neighbours and the public and transforming this part of the Quayside.
Live Theatre is becoming known across the world as one of the UK’s centres of excellence for new writing and one of the most forward thinking cultural businesses. It is cited regularly as an exemplar in diversifying its business model to enable the charity to become more robust and the quality and volume of its work on stage and in educational contexts to grow.
It is intended that the LiveWorks site will provide additional income to help secure the future of Live Theatre. It forms part of a continuing diversification of the Live Theatre business model; that is, to provide additional commercial income streams enabling it to grow and sustain its work in the production of new plays, developing creative talent, education and participation.
The site is probably the last remaining undeveloped prime riverside location on the Newcastle Quayside and presents an unparalleled opportunity for Live Theatre’s activities to have visibility on the Quayside itself and sympathetically revitalise a site which has been derelict for many years.
