Now Open: Hiroshige. The Artist of the Open Road
We’re proud to announce that Hiroshige: The Artist of the Open Road is now open to the public at the British Museum — with exhibition lighting design by Michael Grubb Studio.

This landmark exhibition celebrates the life and legacy of Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), one of Japan’s most iconic ukiyo-e artists. His landscapes and scenes of everyday life influenced generations of Western artists, including Van Gogh, Whistler, and Monet.
Michael Grubb Studio delivered the lighting design for the exhibition, creating a sensitive and immersive environment that showcases Hiroshige’s prints, paintings and illustrated books — many of which are being exhibited publicly for the first time.
Our award-winning team developed a museum lighting scheme that balances the strict conservation lighting requirements of delicate artworks with the need to create an engaging, atmospheric visitor experience. The result is a lighting solution that brings out the vibrancy, texture, and detail of Hiroshige’s world, while protecting it for future generations.

Thank you to the curatorial and conservation teams at the British Museum for their support and collaboration throughout the project.
Hiroshige: The Artist of the Open Road is open now and runs until 7 September 2025.
