Al Shindagha Museum | Dubai, UAE
Lighting design for Al Shindagha Museum celebrates Emirati heritage through narrative-driven, conservation-aware schemes across four immersive pavilions. The scheme enhances multi-sensory exhibitions while protecting delicate artefacts, bridging tradition and innovation through precise, responsive lighting.
Located at the mouth of Dubai Creek, Al Shindagha is one of the city’s oldest and most culturally significant districts. Once the residence of the Al Maktoum royal family and a hub for prominent merchants, the area now forms the heart of the Shindagha Museum. Today it is a cultural landmark inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the traditions and spirit of Emirati life.
Michael Grubb Studio was commissioned by RAA to deliver the lighting design for four new pavilions within the museum: Traditional Craft House, Traditional Jewelry House, Traditional Healthcare House, and the Beauty and Adornment House. These spaces form an evocative cluster that explores themes of creativity, wellbeing, and heritage through an engaging, multi-sensory experience.
Supporting Multi-Sensory Storytelling Through Light
In close collaboration with RAA, whose exhibition design centres on narrative and spatial storytelling, we crafted lighting schemes that support both the thematic journey and the emotional arc of each pavilion. Every space begins with a visually striking introductory object, dramatically lit to anchor the theme and draw visitors in. From there, a series of interpretive displays and hands-on installations invite deeper connection, ranging from tactile and olfactory experiences to sophisticated digital interfaces.
Balancing Conservation and Natural Light in Heritage Architecture
The lighting design had to navigate complex conservation requirements, particularly the tension between the influx of natural daylight within the restored historic buildings and the need to protect light-sensitive artefacts. Our approach carefully balanced these needs, using ambient, accent, and responsive lighting techniques to enhance atmosphere without compromising preservation.
Collaborative Design Rooted in Cultural Authenticity
Stakeholder collaboration was key, involving Dubai Municipality, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and the Culture & Arts Authority, as well as expert input from cultural historians and local artisans. This collective engagement ensured the lighting design remained rooted in cultural authenticity while embracing innovation.
This project exemplifies the potential of light to animate stories, celebrate tradition, and guide emotional engagement. Through a thoughtful synthesis of heritage sensitivity and contemporary design, our lighting approach helped shape an exhibition that traces the UAE’s journey from survival to self-expression, and from simplicity to celebration.
