Woolwich Town Hall | London
A conservation lighting design for a Grade II listed civic building, balancing heritage restoration with contemporary performance. Through carefully considered interventions, the scheme enhances flexibility, improves visitor experience and preserves the architectural character of one of Woolwich’s most significant public landmarks.
Michael Grubb Studio developed the lighting design for the refurbishment of Woolwich Town Centre as part of wider roof repair works, using the opportunity to improve the building’s lighting while working within the constraints of a Grade II listed civic building. The project addresses the main hall, its use as a wedding venue and the external façade through a series of carefully considered interventions that respect the building’s historic character.
Conservation Lighting Design for Grade II Listed Civic Buildings
Supporting Historic Building Restoration of the Main Hall
Internally, the design focuses on enhancing the existing lighting rather than replacing it entirely. The cornice-mounted linear lighting has been upgraded with modern fittings to provide more even illumination across the space, while the original pendant fittings have been retained, repainted and relamped as part of their refurbishment. New lighting has been introduced only where it supports the architecture, with linear uplighting to the domed ceilings and additional spotlight positions highlighting key architectural features around the hall.
These changes improve the everyday use of the space while providing greater flexibility for events. For weddings, the revised lighting creates a more appropriate setting for ceremonies and receptions, with a scheme that responds to different layouts and occasions without altering the character of the hall.
Lighting The External Façade of a Civic Landmark
The external conservation lighting reinforces the building’s role within the town centre. The clock face has been relit, restoring one of the building’s most recognisable features and improving its visibility from Woolwich station and the surrounding public spaces. As a familiar landmark, the illuminated clock continues to guide people through the town centre, particularly during the evening.
Lighting to the façade is limited to key architectural elements, with colour-changing lighting incorporated to support civic events, community celebrations and seasonal occasions. The design avoids broad uplighting, directing light only where it is needed while reducing spill into the surrounding environment.
The project is defined by a series of measured interventions rather than major change. By refurbishing existing fittings, improving the quality of light and introducing new lighting only where it serves a clear purpose, the scheme supports the continued use of the building while respecting its historic fabric.
