Roots in The Sky Winner of MIPIM Award 2023

Michael Grubb Studio had cause for celebration as the Roots in The Sky project was awarded Best New Development at the MIPIM Awards 2023.

Roots in The Sky is a radical reimagining of the former Blackfriars Crown Court, creating a next-gen workspace featuring 385,000 sqft of sustainable offices and community spaces. With plans to feature a 1.1-acre rooftop forest including over 100 trees and 10,000 plants, this project will be London’s first office building to deliver an urban forest rooftop, making a significant contribution to London’s targets for biodiversity and sustainability.

Appointed by Fabrix to provide lighting design services for this project, Michael Grubb Studio are creating a lighting scheme for the various amenities throughout the space. The studio will sensitively illuminate the communal spaces, which feature the atrium, auditorium, café, restaurant, bar, and retail spaces.

Studio Founder Michael Grubb said: “The team here at Michael Grubb Studio could not be more thrilled about this win and congratulate all design partners involved. The Roots in The Sky project aligns with our ethos to create forward thinking, sustainable spaces.”

The MIPIM Awards celebrate the industry’s most sustainable and visionary projects. From exemplary buildings to mixed-use and urban regeneration schemes, winners of the MIPIM Awards will have a holistic commitment to sustainability and enhance the built environment’s environmental goals.
