Ad Gefrin Lighting Design Named as Surface Design Awards Finalist

Michael Grubb Studio is thrilled that the bespoke lighting design created for the Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery has been selected as a finalist in the Surface Design Awards.

Named as one of three finalists in the Light & Surface Interior category, this project has been selected out of an overall 160 entries across 20 countries, highlighting the most remarkable use of materials in an architectural and interior design.

Michael Grubb Studio was directly appointed by the local client Alan, Eileen and Chris Ferguson to create a lighting design which showcases the Ad Gefrin brand and provides a visitor experience in multiple areas, including a working whisky Distillery, Barrel Store, Bistro, Retail, Function Room, Museum and grand Atrium entrance.

Showcasing the Ad Gefrin brand and supporting the local community were fundamental aims of this project, using local companies and craftspeople to create a landmark and legacy that celebrates their rich ancestry for future generations to enjoy and benefit from. The innovative design combines traditional techniques, sustainable practices and modern efficiencies.

There was a real investment in the local community throughout this project as the clients are a family-run business who were committed to involving and benefitting local people. This level of care can be seen throughout the details of the project and the high quality of the result, due to their craftsmanship and personal attention to detail.”

The Surface Design Awards continue to gain worldwide recognition and establish a standard for international achievements in architecture and design with a significant emphasis on sustainability. The winners will be announced at the Surface Design Show 2024 on Thursday 8 February.
